Senegal: Movement for the Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) rebels declare unilateral truce
The rebel Movement for the Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) in southern Senegal has declared a unilateral truce to sue for dialogue with the government, APA can report Wednesday. In an interview with a local radio station in Dakar, MFDC leader Salif Sadio said he hoped the ceasefire will enhance the prospects for lasting peace after more than thirty years of separatist rebellion in the province.
Mr. Sadio said the truce followed talks with officials of the government led by President Macky Sall at the Vatican recently.
Sall’s government had invited the MFDC to jointly facilitate negotiations towards a permanent end to the conflict which began in 1982 when the MFDC began hostilities aimed at winning independence from the rest of Senegal.
