The opposition part in Kyrgyzstan has claimed control after a violent day of clashes in several cities.

The violent scenes, mostly in the capital Bishkek, saw at least 40 people killed and more than 400 wounded.

The protests were against the so-called repressive policies of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who took office in 2005 after a similar opposition uprising called the Tulip Revolution.
