A renegade south Sudan army commander said on Tuesday he had clashed with the oil-producing region’s military for a second time and threatened to attack an important town if the assault continued.
George Athor, who stood as an independent candidate in April elections for governor of Jonglei State and lost to the ruling party, has been on the run since late April, when the southern army (SPLA) accused him of ordering an attack on a barracks that killed eight soldiers.

One of the main rebel groups in Sudan’s Darfur region has threatened “all-out war” if its leader is arrested.
Sudanese officials have asked Interpol to arrest Justice and Equality Movement (Jem) leader Khalil Ibrahim for planning an attack in Omdurman in 2008.
Jem signed a ceasefire with the government in February but left peace talks earlier this month, claiming the government had launched new raids.

Gunmen attacked at least six checkpoints in the Iraqi capital on Monday, killing seven Iraqi troops and policemen, while bombs planted at three others injured several more, an Interior Ministry source said, according to Reuters.
In separate incidents, a roadside bomb targeting a police patrol killed two people in south Baghdad while bombs outside policemen’s homes in the western province of Anbar and a suicide car bomb in the northern city of Mosul killed another six.

Sudanese army denied rumors of imminent attack on the capital of North Darfur by the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) saying no any city is besieged in Darfur.
Despite the signing of a framework agreement and a truce in Doha on 23 February the Sudanese army and JEM rebels accused each other of attacks. Last week, the rebel group suspended its participation in the peace process to protest continual air and ground attacks on its positions.
