North Korean artillery strikes South Korean island of Yeonpyeong with dozens of shells, dozens wounded

North Korea fired dozens of coastal artillery shells, some of which fell on the South’s Yeonpyeong Island near the tense western inter-Korean border, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday.

“The North fired dozens of artillery rounds from its Gaemeori western coastal artillery base at 14:34 p.m. In response to the military provocations, we fired back dozens of rounds with K9 self-propelled howitzers,” JCS spokesman Col. Lee Bung-woo told reporters.

In the artillery firing, one marine solider was killed while a dozen others suffered injuries, as of press time. The military was trying to evacuate civilians on the island near the border. Several civilians were reported to have suffered injuries.

Madagascar: Evacuated civilians near mutiny camp

wg-madagascar-2128-400x300.gif

The Madagascar government on Friday ordered civilians to evacuate areas in and around a military camp in the Antananarivo suburbs where a group of mutinous troops are holed up.

“We ask families living in the Ivato camp and residents of the surrounding area to temporarily leave the area for a safer place,” the Defence Ministry said in a statement broadcast on national radio and television.

Around 20 officers who declared a coup Wednesday but failed to win support from the rest of the military are believed to be inside the camp around 15 kilometres (nine miles) from the city centre near the international airport.

A curious crowd was seen near the army barracks where the troops were holed up just before the defence ministry issued the statement Friday.
