Mauritania: Army foiled planned al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI) attack
Authorities in Mauritania claimed Wednesday that the sub-Saharan country’s security forces have foiled a planned terror attack on its capital Nouakchott by killing three al-Qaeda militants in a gunfight in the outskirts of the city.
Officials said the militant’s vehicle blew up after its occupants engaged in a gun-battle with the security forces early on Wednesday morning. The three militants were killed in the explosion, which also left several troops injured.
The army said later that the all-terrain vehicle destroyed in Wednesday fighting was one among three such vehicles tracked by the military ever since they entered the country by crossing the border with Mali.
