Syria: Rebels resist in the battle for Aleppo
Fierce fighting has resumed today in Syria’s second city, Aleppo, according to activists, who say rebels are resisting a major army offensive.
Air and ground attacks by President Assad’s forces have so far failed to dislodge opposition fighters from the many neighbourhoods under their control.
International mediator Kofi Annan has added his voice to those expressing fears over the violence, widely seen as a decisive battle for Syria’s future.
Civilians have been fleeing the bloodshed with those who can’t escape seeking shelter in basements.
