Syrian opposition fighters on Thursday shot down two military warplanes over the northwestern province of Idlib, said a monitoring group.
Both jets were hit with fire from heavy machineguns while the air force was carrying out a series of raids in the area, much of which is under the control of the opposition fighters, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Colombian rebels from the National Liberation Army said they had freed two Peruvians and three Colombians kidnapped last month from a gold mine in the north of the country.
The ELN, as Colombia’s second biggest guerrilla group is known, did not mention a Canadian seized at the same time.

Gunmen have stormed a military base in southern Thailand, according to an army spokesman. The assault, which is the most deadly in some eight years of violence, has left at least 16 militants dead.
The gun battle between soldiers and at least 60 insurgents happened Wednesday in the province of Narathiwat on the Malaysian border.

The Government of Sudan and one of the main rebel factions in Darfur have signed a ceasefire agreement to move the peace process forward, the United Nations-African Union mediator announced today.
“This is a major breakthrough in the road towards a comprehensive and lasting peace accord in Darfur,” said Aïchatou Mindaoudou, who is also the Acting Joint Special Representative in the UN-AU peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

Rebels seized a military airport in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo on Tuesday, killing, injuring and capturing a total of around 40 troops, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
“The remainder of the troops pulled out from the airport, leaving behind several warplanes and large amounts of ammunition,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.
