A series of car bombs struck predominantly Shi’ite areas of Iraq on April 29, killing at least 36.
Police say 18 people were killed and 42 wounded by two car bombs in the southeastern city of Amarah.
Another car bomb in Diywaniya killed nine people and wounded 23.

Israeli warplanes launched three strikes early on Sunday on the Gaza Strip, targeting radical Palestinian group Islamic Jihad but causing no casualties, witnesses said.
Two air strikes hit the southern town of Khan Yunis, targeting positions of the Al-Quds Brigade, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad. The third was near the southern town of Rafah straddling the border with Egypt, the Palestinian witnesses said.

As Voice of Russia reported today, Taliban insurgents announced the launch of a new offensive Saturday, saying they would infiltrate Afghan and foreign forces and their bases “in a systematic and coordinated manner.”
The operation will be launched on Sunday, nationwide “against the transgressing invaders and their degenerated backers”, a rebel statement said. April 28 marks the commemoration of the overthrow of Soviet-backed Mohammad Najibullah’s government in 1992. That was also start date of the civil war.

Some 3,000 fighters from one of South Sudan’s biggest rebels groups, the SSLA, have handed in their weapons, officials
say.
