Philippine troops have called off an offensive that killed dozens of breakaway Muslim rebels and dislodged 100 others from two southern strongholds ahead of the resumption this week of peace talks between the government and a main insurgent group, military officials said Monday.
Village officials and witnesses have reported between 36 to 80 armed fighters of the rebel faction Bangsamoro Islamic Liberation Movement were killed in clashes over the weekend in villages of a vast marshland bordering the provinces of Maguindanao and North Cotabato, according to army officials.

The Afghan Defense Ministry says 14 Afghan soldiers and dozens of Taliban militants have been killed across the country in the past 24 hours.
In a statement on July 7, the ministry said three Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed by artillery fire and roadside bombs in Wardak Province, west of Kabul.
Around a dozen Taliban insurgents were killed in the operation.

A Yemeni security official says two soldiers have been killed and two others wounded after a bomb placed under their car exploded at a checkpoint in the capital.
The official said Saturday’s explosion in Sanaa also wounded a passer-by. The official spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

South Sudan on Thursday accused neighbouring Sudan of carrying out grounds and air attacks in its Upper Nile and Unity states, killing unknown numbers of civilians and wounding four government soldiers.
The attack comes just days after South Sudan vice-president, Riek Machar paid a high level visit to Khartoum in a bid to diffuse tension, over oil row, between the two nations.

A series of attacks on security checkpoints and headquarters in the governorate of North Sinai took place in the late hours of Thursday.
The attacks occurred in the cities of Al-Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah. An attack on Al-Joura checkpoint in south Sheik Zuweid left one soldier dead after being shot in head, another officer injured and five other soldiers seriously injured. The checkpoint lies on a road leading to a peacekeeping forces camp and the Central Security Forces camp in Rafah.
