Kurdish rebels on Saturday took control of a key border crossing between Syria and Iraq, in an effort to prevent al-Qaeda-linked groups from entering the region, a Britain-based watchdog said.
Following three days of fighting with the al-Qaeda-linked fighters of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and al-Nusra Front, the Kurdish rebels seized the al-Yaroubiyeh crossing in al-Hasaka province, north-eastern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Fighting resumed on Friday between the army and rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations said, just days after peace talks were suspended.
Clashes took place some 25 kilometres (16 miles) to the north of the strategic eastern city of Goma, rebel spokesman Vianney Kazarama told AFP.

Tunisian security forces last night captured al-Khatib al-Idrissy, who is thought to be the chief of outlawed fundamentalist Islamist militia group Ansar al-Shariah Tunisia, sources said Friday.
He was captured in the central town of Sidi Ali Ben Aoun, where Islamic militia killed six national guardsmen on Wednesday. A police officer was gunned down in a separate clash on the same day.

Fighting between Burma government forces and the Kachin Independence Army continued yesterday in northern Shan state’s Mabein township, an area bordering Kachin state and the territory of KIA battalion 12 under 3rd brigade, the Kachin News Group has learned.
The clashes involved units from KIA battalions 12 and 27 and took place at Saga Nam Hkum near Je U village. Tuesday and Wednesday saw the Burma army repeatedly shell Mung Ding Pa village, according to a KIA officer based in the area. Yesterday one child was killed by a shell while four other villagers were injured, according to an individual who was able to speak to someone in the village.

There are more than 60,00 Iranians fighting alongside forces loyal to Syria’s authoritarian president Bashar al-Assad, the leader of the country’s main opposition alliance claimed on Tuesday.
‘’In Syria, there are over 60,000 fighters from Iran,” said Ahmad Jarba.
For this reason Iran should not attend Syrian peace talks dubbed Geneva II scheduled to take place next month, Jarba said.
