Syrian troops advanced on the Islamist-held northern village of Tal Hassel today, prompting jihadist rebels in nearby Aleppo to call for mass mobilisation to counter the offensive.
Fighting raged at Tal Hassel, some 12 kilometres (seven miles) from Aleppo, the country’s pre-war commercial hub, where the regime and rebels have been locked in a bloody standoff for more than a year. In clashes elsewhere in the country, nine people were killed by shelling in the central city of Homs, the official SANA news agency reported.

About a week after the government offered 17 ethnic armed groups a nationwide ceasefire proposal, one group—the ethnic Palaung—has stated that they reject the conditions set out in the draft agreement.
In early November, ethnic groups convened in Laiza to develop a joint position in their ceasefire negotiations with Naypyidaw. On Nov. 5, at a high-profile meeting in the Kachin capital Myitkyina, Minister Aung Min’s peace negotiations team met with Burma’s major rebel groups and handed them a draft ceasefire agreement.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) is readying to launch a massive military campaign in the coming days against rebel positions, a senior official said on Monday.
Sudanese presidential assistant Nafie Ali Nafie, who was attending the inauguration ceremony of an economic housing project in Nahr al-Neel state on Monday, renewed the government’s call for rebels to sit down at the negotiating table and “repent” once and for all.

Syrian forces backed by Lebanese Hezbollah militants recaptured an army base in northern Syria from rebels on Sunday, the third day of heavy fighting for the strategic military target which has changed hands three times since Friday.
State media and activists said President Bashar al-Assad’s forces were in full control of the 80th Brigade base, which lies just a few hundred metros (yards) north of Aleppo airport on the eastern edge of the disputed city.
