Mozambique’s state media says opposition fighters killed four soldiers in two separate attacks amid escalating violence in the central part of the country.
The Mozambique News Agency reported Wednesday that three troops died in an ambush a day earlier by gunmen loyal to Renamo, the former rebel movement that fought a civil war after independence from Portugal in 1975.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s M23 rebel group declared an end to its 20-month rebellion on Tuesday and said it was ready to disarm and demobilise troops and pursue a political solution to end the crisis in the east of the country.
The M23 declaration was issued hours after government forces drove the rebel fighters out of their last two strongholds at around 3 a.m (0000 GMT) on Tuesday.

Forces loyal to Syria’s government are taking advantage of deepening rifts among the country’s rebels to advance into rebel-held territory in northern Syria, overturning some long-held assumptions about the war.
The resignation Sunday of a top leader in the U.S.-backed Free Syrian Army further underscored the extent to which rebel infighting is undermining the effort not only to topple President Bashar al-Assad but also to hold on to territories won by the opposition in more than two years of conflict.

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered for the deployment of heavily-armed soldiers and tanks at the Uganda border with Democratic Republic of Congo following fresh fights between the DRC Army and the M23 rebels.
During the heavy fighting on Monday morning, the bomb shells landed into Kisoro district injuring several people. At least four people are confirmed dead from the bombshells, several injured and others in critical conditions at Kisoro Referral Hospital. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda also confirmed that several people have been injured by the bombshells.

M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have declared a ceasefire in their fight with state forces.
The announcement raised hopes of an advance in peace talks between the two sides – although there was no immediate reaction from the army.
