The Al-Qaeda inspired jihadist group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has claimed Monday’s attack on a gas pipeline in Egypt’s restive Sinai peninsula.

In a statement posted to jihadist websites, the Sinai-based group said it carried out the attack on the pipeline south of the flashpoint town of El-Arish to “strike at the Egyptian economy and regime”.

The authenticity of the statement has not been verified.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has claimed responsibility for most of the spate of deadly militant attacks across the country since the army ousted Egypt’s elected Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July last year.
