Nine al-Shabaab militants wearing military fatigues and carrying guns and grenades died after attacking the presidential palace with two car bombs on Friday, in an assault the president called a “media spectacular” by a “dying animal.”
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was unharmed, but two government officials were killed, the interior ministry said.

Pakistan Air Force fighter jets bombed suspected terrorist hideouts in the tribal belt on the Afghan border on Thursday, killing at least 40 people, security officials said.
“At least 40 terrorists were killed in the precision strikes in the Mir Ali area,” one intelligence official told Reuters. “Six different locations were bombed.”

An attack by scores of Boko Haram Islamists in the north-east Nigeria town of Bama has killed 60 people and caused massive destruction to public buildings.
Residents said gunmen stormed the town at roughly 4am on Wednesday, armed with heavy weapons and tossed explosives into various buildings, forcing residents to flee into the surrounding bush.

A short-lived truce crumbled Thursday as gunfire erupted at Independence Square, the center of anti-government protests and an increasingly violent crisis that threatens catastrophe for this divided nation.
The head of the protesters’ medical service said 100 people died and 500 were injured in clashes on Thursday, just hours after the government declared a truce in fighting that had shocked world leaders with the deaths of 28 people two days before.

At least 12 people were killed in violent clashes between Yemeni troops and militants secessionists in the southern Yemeni province of Dhaleh on Tuesday, two Defense Ministry officials told CNN.
Among those killed were six troops and six militants. A top army colonel was among the government troops killed.
