South Sudan: SPLM-in-Opposition rebels claim full control of Renk town in Upper Nile
The South Sudan’s rebels, The SPLM-in-Opposition have this afternoon claimed to have captured the strategic Northern Upper Nile town of Renk from the government forces.
Rebel sources in Nasir disclosed to the Upper Nile Times that their colleagues overran the town in the afternoon chasing out a contingent of government forces and JEM rebels in the area.
Renk is a strategically located border town that exposes Paloch oil fields to eminent attacks from rebels. The town was the most peaceful place in the whole of Upper Nile after the other major towns exchanged hands with the rebels. The town became a great sanctuary for displaced civilians who ran from the war in Malakal, Kaka and other areas of Upper Nile.
