Rebels slaughtered hundreds of civilians when they seized the South Sudan oil hub of Bentiu, hunting down men, women and children who had sought refuge in a hospital, mosque and Catholic church, the United Nations said yesterday.
Rebel troops overran Bentiu, the capital of the oil producing Unity State, on Tuesday. More than one million people have fled their homes since fighting erupted in December between troops backing President Salva Kiir and soldiers loyal to his sacked vice-president, Riek Machar. The fighting has exacerbated ethnic tensions between Mr Kiir’s Dinka people and Mr Machar’s Nuer.

Four FARC guerrillas have been killed in fighting in Colombia this weekend, the army said.

Fourteen soldiers have been killed in a terrorist attack committed Saturday evening at 10 p.m. in the commune of Iboudraren (50km southeast of Tizi-Ouzou), security source said Sunday.
A convoy of the People’s National Army (ANP), which was returning after securing Thursday’s presidential election, has been surprised by an “important” terrorist group which has enmeshed them in the place called Carrière, the same source added.

An air strike targeted on Saturday a truck carrying 11 terrorists in al-Hazmieh area, al-Bayda province, killing 10 and wounding a terrorist, a security source of the Supreme Security Committee has announced.
In a statement to Saba, the source pointed out that the committee had received intelligence suggesting 11 terrorists traveling by a truck were heading to al-Bayda city and planning to target vital military and civil sites in the city.

The United Nations said on Friday at least 58 people were killed and more than 100 others wounded in an attack against one of its bases in South Sudan sheltering thousands of civilians.
The top UN official in the war-torn nation, Toby Lanzer, praised peacekeepers from India, Nepal and South Korea for preventing what could have been a massacre of up to 5000 people, and vowed the world body would use “lethal force” again to protect civilians under their protection.
