Nigeria: Boko Haram militants killed 8 teachers and 11 others in Maiduguri

At least 19 people have been killed within 48 hours (Thursday and Friday) in Borno State by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect whom may to have resumed killings weeks after the Maiduguri Giwa barracks attack, eyewitnesses and security operatives confirmed.

LEADERSHIP Weekend had it on good authority that the Boko Haram gunmen had on Thursday evening invaded Dikwa village (130km away from Maidugui) and attacked a college where they killed eight teachers and fled with some women.

Sri Lanka: Army says it killed 3 Tamil separatists militants

Sri Lanka’s military said on Friday it had killed three ethnic Tamil separatist militants, the first combat since government troops crushed the rebels in a 2009 offensive.

The government, heavily criticized by Western governments and the United Nations for alleged rights abuses in 2009, said the clash showed Tamil rebels were re-emerging in Sri Lanka’s ethnic Tamil dominated north.

Somalia: Strong battle between al-Shabaab islamists and government troops

A battle was reported to have erupted in the Eeel Bur and Wabho towns of the Galgaduud region between the co-allied Somali National Army and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops against Al-Shabaab.

The Ethiopian troops of the AMISOM force along with the Somali soldiers were en route to Eel Bur when they were attacked by the Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab Islamists.

Yemen: 5 killed as Shiite rebels press advance on Yemen capital

Shiite rebels believed to be seeking to advance on Yemen’s capital have attacked an army post in a neighbouring city, killing three soldiers and losing two of their own, tribal sources said Thursday.

The Zaidi rebels, also known as Ansarullah or Huthis, carried out the attack in Amran, 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of Sanaa, late on Wednesday, tribal sources said.

Burma-Myanmar: Hundred displaced as Burma army shells Kachin Independence Army (KIA) rebel post

Heavy fighting between government forces and troops from the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) displaced more than 300 local residents in eastern Kachin State on Thursday.

The fighting began Thursday morning when government troops attacked KIA Third Brigade positions close to Mai Ja Yang, the second-largest town controlled by the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), aid workers operating in the area told The Irrawaddy. The KIO is the political wing of the KIA.
