Somalia: Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack on parliament compound in Mogadishu
A car bomb laden with explosive devices, rammed into the main entrance of the parliament compound on Saturday. Over 100 Members of Parliament were present at the ordinary parliamentary session when the unexpected blast rocked the compound. Although no legislators were killed, three MPs were reported have been injured and are suffering from critical wounds.
The Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab terrorist group quickly claimed responsibility for the attack. Several of the terrorist insurgents stormed parliament almost immediately after the first blast, gunning down all security guards stationed at the main checkpoint outside. The first explosion was followed by a detonation of a suicide vest worn by one of the Islamist militants.
At least 7 of the militants were killed, and up to 25 ordinary people were killed. Our reporter at the scene, Mohamed Shino, sighted the bodies and confirmed that they belonged to mainly security forces and employees that worked in the parliament.
