Tension is brewing along the Sudan-Ethiopia border after ten Sudanese soldiers were killed in a skirmish with a militia group there on Saturday, the army and witnesses said. Sudanese farmers in Gedaref State told the {African Press Agency } on Sunday that another 13 soldiers were injured in the attack believed to have been carried out by an Ethiopian militia.
Other reports spoke of Sudan’s Paramilitary Popular Defense (PDF) amassing troops near the border with Ethiopia in the wake of the incident, the second in one month.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, the Sunni militant group that’s been leading an insurgency in Iraq, made a bold statement today: The organization’s Shura Council has declared a new caliphate, and the organization’s extremist leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is the new caliph.
As Al-Jazeera explains, the caliphate refers to a “system of rule that ended nearly 100 years ago with the fall of the Ottoman empire.” According to the network’s reading of the statement, the new caliphate “stretches from Iraq’s Diyala province to Syria’s Aleppo.”

Suspected members of the Islamic militant sect, Boko Haram, have attacked three communities in Chibok Local Government Area in Borno State, killing no fewer than 10 persons.
According to the president, Kibaku Youth Association of Nigeria, Mr. Moses Zakwa, three communities were attacked by the insurgents.

In North Waziristan, 18 more terrorists have been killed and their six hideouts destroyed in aerial strikes and artillery fire at Mir Ali.
According to ISPR, terrorist’s concentrations were targeted early Saturday morning by integrated fire of Artillery, Tanks and heavy weapons outside Miranshah in North Waziristan Agency killing seven terrorists.

Iraqi security forces retook the city of Tikrit on Saturday, a local tribal leader and state media said, as they went on the offensive against the Sunni extremist militants who have seized swaths of northern and western Iraq.
Sheikh Khamis al-Joubouri, a key tribal leader in Tikrit, told CNN that the Iraqi security forces entered the city supported by special forces and fighters from among the local tribes, and had gained control.
