Yemen: Houthi Shia rebels sign peace agreement with Yemeni government to end clashes
Shia rebels and the Yemeni government have signed an agreement aimed at halting violent clashes that have left more than 140 people dead and forced thousands to flee their homes.
The accord was brokered over the weekend by the UN envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar.
The agreement calls for an immediate ceasefire and the formation of a technocratic government within a month.
“We’ve come to this hall to sign this agreement to stop the the Yemeni bloodshed that is taking place in every street”, said President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, “what is happening is not pleasing God and his prophet. We are responsible to our people and for taking responsibility for the ceasefire”.
