Iraq: Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga troops launch offensive against Islamic State jihadists on 3 fronts
Kurdish Peshmerga troops launched offensives against the Islamic State jihadist group on three fronts in northern Iraq on Tuesday, senior officers told AFP.
Troops struck before dawn against a town on the Syrian border, north of jihadist-controlled second city Mosul, and south of key oil hub Kirkuk, the commanders said.
Peshmerga officials reported on Tuesday that Kurdish forces retook the strategic border town of Rabia from Islamic State forces who seized the area in late July.
Peshmerga commander Shiekh Ahmad Mohammad told Rudaw: “Rabia is under the control of Kurdish forces. We are leaving their bodies behind and picking up their abandoned weapons.”
