Syria: Islamic State militants attack government airbase in eastern Syria

Islamic State militants launched an attack overnight on a major military air base in eastern Syria in what looked to be a push to eliminate the last significant government outpost in the extremist-dominated region, activists said Thursday.

The airfield just outside the city of Deir el-Zour is a key military facility for President Bashar Assad, giving his warplanes a hub from which to bomb IS-held cities and towns across much of eastern Syria. For the Islamic State group, capturing the airport would eliminate the main pocket of resistance in the area and provide a major morale and propaganda boost after a string of setbacks in recent weeks.

Russia: At least 16 killed and 28 policemen wounded by in chechen rebels attack in Chechnya

Gunmen stormed a building in Chechnya’s regional capital of Grozny on Thursday killing 16 people, including ten police, hours before President Vladimir Putin vowed in a policy speech to defend Russia against what he called efforts to dismember it.

Chechnya’s Kremlin-backed leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, wrote on his Instagram account that “six terrorists were annihilated” after they had opened fire at a police patrol car, killing three officers and then stormed offices housing local media.

Yemen: Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claims responsibility for attack on Iranian ambassador residence

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), also known as Ansar Al-Shariah, claimed responsibility on Wednesday evening for a remote-detonated car bomb which exploded outside the Iranian ambassador’s residence in Sana’a at approximately 9:00 a.m. One person was killed and 17 others were injured in the attack.

AQAP claimed responsibility on their Twitter account and posted photos of the scene following the attack.

Iran: Pentagon says Iran bombed Islamic State in Iraq, Tehran denies involvement

Iran has denied conducting airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in Iraq, Reuters reports, citing a senior Iranian official.

“Iran has never been involved in any air strikes against the Daesh targets in Iraq. Any cooperation in such strikes with America is also out of question for Iran,” the senior official told the news agency on condition of anonymity. The Islamic State, a radical Sunni group currently controlling large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria, is also known as Daesh.

Libya: Libyan warplane attacks arms depot of Islamist militias in Zuwara

A Libyan national army warplane Tuesday bombed an ammunition depot in an Islamist militants-controlled area, according to a military source.

The source told Xinhua that a MiG-21 fighter carried out an airstrike against an ammunition storage site in the town of Zuwarah, some 120 km west of capital Tripoli. There were no casualties.
