Unidentified gunmen killed a Somali soldier and injured another late Wednesday in an attack on a military base in the northeastern, semi-autonomous region of Puntland, local residents said Thursday.

According to the residents, a group of militants attacked a base of Puntland troops in Bosaso in the late hours of Wednesday, leaving one soldier dead and another wounded.

On Thursday, military units were deployed in the nearby districts and an unspecified number of suspects were arrested, the residents said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but it came only days after the local administration said they would act against Al-Shabaab militants stationed in Galgala Mountains region in eastern Bosaso.
