Nigeria: Boko Haram massacres 2.000 people in attack on Baga, city burnt to the ground

Nigeria’s militant Islamists have carried out a second attack on the key north-eastern town of Baga, an official has told the BBC.

Boko Haram fighters burnt down almost the entire town on Wednesday, after over-running a military base on Saturday, Musa Alhaji Bukar said.

Iraq: Islamic State (IS) militants launch a major attack on Samarra

Islamic State (IS) militants launched a major attack on Samarra, a city in Iraq’s northern central province of Salahudin, a provincial security source said.

The attack occurred at dawn when five suicide bombers blew up their explosives-laden trucks near the security checkpoints on a highway and at the western entrance of Samarra, some 120 km north of Iraq’s capital Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Central African Republic: Senior Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander surrenders to US troops

A senior commander in the Lord’s Resistance Army – the brutal insurgent force which has terrorised a swath of central Africa – has surrendered to American forces.

Uganda’s military confirmed on Wednesday that Dominic Ongwen was in the custody of US special forces in Central African Republic.

France: At least 12 dead in Islamist terror attack at satirical French publication Charlie Hebdo

Three black-clad gunmen shouting “Allahu Akbar!” stormed the Paris offices of a satirical publication known for lampooning Islam Wednesday, killing 12, including its editor, three political cartoonists and a police officer whose cold-blooded murder at close range was captured on a disturbing video.

The masked, Kalashnikov-toting shooters moved with military precision, and then escaped following the 11:30 a.m. attack at Charlie Hebdo, the publication known for challenging Muslim terrorists with a 2011 caricature of Prophet Muhammed on its cover and which recently tweeted a cartoon of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and were being sought.

Yemen: 40 killed and wounded in carbomb blast at police college in Sanaa

A car bomb exploded outside a police college in Yemen’s capital Sanaa early on Wednesday, killing around 40 people and wounding more than 50 others, police sources and residents said.

Security in Yemen has diminished since a 2011 popular uprising that led to a change of government and splits in the army. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the movement’s most active wings, has staged a growing number of bombings and shootings across the country.
