Mali: Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) militants claim attack on Nampala army base that killed at least 8 soldiers

A raid against a Malian army base in Nampala, a town in central Mali located near the border with Mauritania, left eight troops dead on Monday. A military source with the United Nations Mission in Mali, known as MINUSMA, reported that armed fighters entered the camp at around 6:15 AM, “penetrating the Nampala military camp with relative ease.”

A source close to Mali’s government told VICE News that 10 of the assailants were also killed during the attack. Militants from the regional Islamist group al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) have claimed responsibility for the assault and taken several hostages, according to the Mauritanian news agency Alakhbar, though this information has not yet been confirmed by the Malian government.

Syria: Kurdish fighters capture key area in Kobane after heavy fighting with Islamic State militants

Kurdish fighters have advanced in the northern Syrian town of Kobani after heavy fighting with Islamic State militants, local officials and activists say.

Kobane official Idriss Nassan and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syrian Kurdish forces had captured the so-called security quarter, which houses the police headquarters and other government buildings.

Burundi: At least 100 rebels killed in Burundi attack by a rebel group

At least 100 rebels have been killed after a cross-border attack against the central African nation of Burundi from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a top military source told AFP Sunday.

A general in the Burundian army, speaking on condition that he not be named, said the attack by the unidentified rebel group had been defeated after five days of heavy fighting in the border area north of the capital Bujumbura.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: UN and DR Congo soldiers capture several National Liberation Forces (FNL) rebel bases near Burundi

The United Nations and Democratic Republic of the Congo have captured several rebel bases in an offensive against Burundi rebel movement, the National Liberation Forces (FNL), the UN says.

The forces carried out joint operations against FNL rebels east of the country on Monday and managed to seize several Hutu rebel strongholds, a UN spokesman in DR Congo said.

Somalia: Al-Shabaab claims yesterday’s deadly attack in Mogadishu

The al-Qaeda Linked militants al-Shabaab has claimed yesterday’s deadly attack in Wabera district in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

The militants have stated that their fighters have carried out the attack in which five people including the person who carried out the suicide attack have lost their lives.
