More than 30 police commandos were killed in a clash with Moro rebels in the southern province of Maguindanao in the biggest single-day combat loss for Philippine forces in many years, officials said.
The commandos, who are members of the police Special Action Force (SAF), had entered the far-flung village of Tukanalipao in Mamasapano town at dawn looking for a top terror suspect, but had a “misencounter” with members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and other insurgents, Mayor Tahirudin Benzar Ampatuan of Mamasapano told The Associated Press by telephone.

At least 35 militants were killed today as Pakistan armed forces carried out fresh airstrikes in North Waziristan tribal agency bordering Afghanistan.
According to a statement by Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR), hideouts of militants were bombed in Datta Khel area of the North Waziristan Agency as part of the ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb.

In fierce fighting Sunday, Nigerian troops clashed with Islamic extremists who attacked Maiduguri, the biggest city in northeast Nigeria. Dozens of combatants have been killed and wounded, soldiers and hospital workers said.
“Coordinated air and land operations are being conducted now,” Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Chris Olukolade said in a message posted on Twitter.

About 30 people have been killed in the eastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol as fighting escalated to the worst level in months. Pro-Russia separatists had announced they were launching an offensive on the strategic city.
The death toll from rocket fire attacks in eastern Ukraine climbed on Saturday, with an estimated 30 people killed and dozens more wounded in a residential area of the city of Mariupol.

The bodies of 3 additional Lebanese soldiers had been discovered Saturday in a battlefield close to the Syrian border, bringing to eight the quantity killed in the newest clashes with Syrian Islamist rebels, authorities said.
The intense gun battles have once again dramatized how violence from the Syrian war, now approaching its fourth year, has migrated into neighboring Lebanon.
