Russia-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine claimed Tuesday to have taken the key transportation hub of Debaltseve as both parties faced a deadline to start pulling back heavy weapons from the front line.
Fierce fighting on Tuesday appeared to be focused on Debaltseve, a government-held town surrounded by rebel forces that both sides claim to be on their side of the cease-fire line. The issue was not resolved under a cease-fire agreement negotiated last week by the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France.

Boko Haram launched a pre-dawn raid on Monguno, 137 kilometers from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

The Egyptian armed forces carried out an airstrike on the self-proclaimed ‘Islamic State’ in Libya. They hit camps, training sites, and ammunition and weaponry warehouses after 21 Coptic Egyptians were killed on Saturday.
The strike, conducted in the early hours of Monday “hit its targets accurately”, an armed forces statement said.

Fifteen militants were killed Sunday as security forces repelled a militant attack in Pakistan, the media said Sunday.
The militants attacked a security post in Kurram Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, injuring a soldier, Dawn reported.

The Provincial Council of Anbar Province has announced that Iraqi security forces, tribal militants and local forces have freed the town of Baghdadi, west of Rummadi but warned that Islamic State (IS) has gathered insurgents to re-attack the town.
Council member Taha Abdulghani told Iraqi local media that Baghdadi is mostly under the control of the Iraqi army, aside from some hidden IS sniper positions.
