A hostage situation is continuing since Friday night in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh where around 250 villagers were seized by Maoist rebels on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to neighbouring Dantewada.
Chief Minister Raman Singh said anywhere between 200 and 250 villagers were abducted by the Naxals from a few villages in Sukma district and efforts were being made by the local administration for their release.

Myanmar Air Force’s two fighter jets on Thursday launched bombing raids on KIA’s 12th Battalion positions in southern Kachin State. KIA source said the two jets attacked KIA troops for about 10 minutes dropping bombs and firing rockets.
The latest round of fighting began when a combined force of Burmese army’s 15th and 142nd Light Infantry Battalions encroached into KIA’s 12th Battalion position near Nam Lim Pa on May 6 at around 1 pm.

A top al-Qaeda militant who claimed responsibility for the Charlie Hebdo attack has been killed, according to the SITE intelligence group.
It quoted al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) as saying Nasser bin ali al Ansi was killed in a US strike in Yemen.

The Afghan government has launched a major offensive against Taliban forces near the north-eastern provincial capital of Kunduz.
The Taliban have come close to the city in recent fighting, leaving it cut off with tens of thousands of displaced.

The United Nations said on Wednesday two Tanzanian army officers serving as UN peacekeepers were killed and 13 others were injured after they were attacked by rebels in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).
The UN said in a statement issued in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam that four other peacekeepers were reported missing.
