Islamic State militants took control of areas of the historic Syrian city of Palmyra from government forces in fierce fighting today, and the Syrian antiquities chief called on the world to save its ancient heritage from the jihadists.
The central city, known as Tadmur in Arabic, is home to a Unesco World Heritage site and is also a strategic military location in central Syria linked by highways to the cities of Homs and Damascus, some 240km to the southwest.

At least 13 terrorists were killed Wednesday when military jets bombarded militant dens in North Waziristan agency.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the air raids targeted terrorist hideouts in Dattakhel area of the tribal region, located close to the Afghan border.

Rebels including al-Qaeda’s local affiliate seized the Syrian regime’s largest remaining military base in northwestern Idlib province on Tuesday, a monitor said.
The loss of Al Mastumah base leaves only a few positions in regime hands in the province, which lies along the border with Turkey and neighbours the government stronghold of Latakia province on the Mediterranean coast.

South Sudanese army (SPLA) has quietly suspended a previous plan to launch full scale offensive on positions held by armed opposition faction led by former vice president, Riek Machar, including their headquarters in Pagak.
Military officials said the plan to recapture rebels held towns in all the three states of Upper Nile region has been reversed by the recent defeat of government’s forces in many towns in Upper Nile state following the recapture of the state capital, Malakal.

Fierce clashes erupted again on Monday in the central Libyan city of Sirte between Islamic State (IS) militants and forces loyal to the Tripoli-based government.
Mohamed Zadma, who is leading the security operation in Sirte, told Anadolu Agency that his forces had been “hunting down” IS militants near a number of government buildings in the city.
