Syria: Syrian Kurdish YPG militia gain ground against Islamic State (IS) in Syria

The Syrian Kurdish YPG militia has announced that it has begun advancing towards an Islamic State-held town at the Turkish border on Saturday, penetrating deeper into the jihadists’ stronghold of Raqqa province in a campaign backed by U.S.-led air strikes.

A militia spokesman told the press that the YPG and smaller Syrian Arab rebel groups fighting alongside it had begun the move towards Tel Abyad after they encircled the Islamic State-held town of Suluk 20 km (12 miles) to the southeast.

Pakistan: Airstrikes army kill 20 militants in Datta Khel in North Waziristan

Pakistan s military says airstrikes have killed 20 suspected militants in a troubled northwestern tribal region near the Afghan border.

A statement Saturday said the strikes killed insurgents in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan.

Iraq: Popular Mobilisation Front shiite militia prepares for battle to take back Falluja

More Shiite militiamen arrived in Iraq’s Anbar province on Friday hoping to recapture the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah from the Islamic State militant group.

But the Iranian-backed fighters have warned Washington against sending extra resources saying coalition assistance only hurts their efforts to tackle the jihadists.

Afghanistan: Talibans attack police post in Helmand province killing 17 policemen

Dozens of Taliban insurgents attacked a police post in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province, killing at least 17 policemen, police said on Saturday.

With US forces no longer providing air support for their Afghan allies, Taliban fighters are attacking government positions in large numbers this year with the aim of taking and holding territory in remote parts of the country.

Burma-Myanmar: Kokang rebels of Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) declare unilateral cease-fire with Myanmar troops

Myanmar’s armed ethnic Kokang group declared a unilateral cease-fire with Myanmar forces on Thursday in a bid to end four months of hostilities with the national army along the Chinese border to bring stability to the region and prevent the clashes from disrupting general elections scheduled for later this year, an official with the group said.

“We have declared that we will not launch an offensive because people have been suffering over four months because of the war,” Tun Myat Linn, spokesman for the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), the Kokang army, told RFA’s Myanmar Service.
