Somalia: AMISOM and Somali National Army launch military offensive against al-Shabaab in Bay and Gedo regions

A military offensive against Al Shabaab in the Bay and Gedo regions of Somalia, codenamed ‘Operation Jubba Corridor’ is underway with the aim of flushing out the terrorist group from the rural areas.

The operation being undertaken by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and Somali National Army (SNA) troops follows recent successful operations that have seen the militants pushed out of most regions of the country.

Egypt: 3 soldiers and 59 militants killed in North Sinai

Three soldiers have been killed and four injured after a mortar launched by militants landed at a security checkpoint in Sheikh Zuweid, announced Egypt’s Military.

News of the deaths comes after Egypt’s Armed Forces released two separate press releases which stated that 45 “terrorists had been eliminated” and others arrested. According to the press releases, the military had engaged multiple targets in the North Sinai.

Algeria: 9 soldiers killed in attack claimed by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

At least nine Algerian soldiers were killed when Islamist militants ambushed their patrol west of the capital Algiers last week in one of the deadliest attacks in months, the defense ministry said on Sunday.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed Friday’s attack in the Ain Defla region in a statement posted on a social media account that often releases its communiques.

Chad: At least 19 Boko Haram fighters killed by Chadian soldiers

At least 19 Boko Haram fighters and two Chadian soldiers were killed in combat on Friday after the insurgents attacked a Chadian village on the banks of Lake Chad, a military source said.

“The Islamists fighters attacked early this morning and we returned fire and they were forced to flee back into Nigeria,” the source told Reuters by telephone from Komguia, where the fighting took place.

Iraq: ISIL claims responsibility of suicide bomb that killed more than 100 people

More than 100 people are reported dead in a suicide car bombing at a busy market in Iraq.

ISIL said it was behind the blast in the mainly Shi’ite town of Khan Bani Saad, some 30 kilometres northeast of Baghdad.
