Benin’s President Thomas Boni Yayi announced he will send 800 troops to join a new multinational force tasked with fighting Boko Haram militants after meeting with his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday.
Buhari, who was sworn in on 29 May, is facing a particularly deadly surge of Islamist violence at home, with more than 800 people killed in north-eastern Nigeria in the last two months.

More than 150 suspected militants have been killed on various fronts across Afghanistan during the last 48 hours, the Afghan security establishment announced on Saturday.
According to the Ministry of Defense, a total of 127 suspected militants were killed across the country in the past 48 hours. Another 16 militants were reported dead by the Ministry of Interior.

Nearly 40 government and opposition fighters have been killed as Syrian regime forces pushed rebels back from an area bordering President Bashar al-Assad’s heartland, a monitor said Saturday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 20 regime forces and 19 rebels from the Army of Conquest alliance had been killed in 24 hours of clashes in Hama province’s Sahl al-Ghab region.

Fourteen people were wounded in an attack Friday, July 31, by suspected rebels wielding grenade launchers and automatic weapons in Thailand’s war-torn Muslim-majority south, officials said.
The early morning attack on village security volunteers, a local protection force armed by the state against the rebels, in Yala province left four seriously wounded, police told AFP.
