Somalia: Al-Shabaab militants raid African Union base killing 50 soldiers
Anti-government Al Shabab militants attacked an Ugandan military camp that beloged to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and killed 50 peacekeepers, said a communique from that radical Somali organization.
The base is located in Janale, in Basse-Shabelle region, about 90 km (55 miles) south of this capital, and the command entered the base after one of their fighters rammed a car bomb into the base’s gate, said Al Shabab spokesman, Abdulaziz Abu Musab.
The fighters took control of the camp in about an hour and the majority of the Ugandan soldiers defending the base escaped through a nearby river.
According to the communique, Al Shabab carried out the attack in reprisal to the killing of seven civilians a family party last July.
