Yemen: Mosque suicide bombings kill at least 28 people, attack claimed by Islamic State

At least 28 people have been killed and 50 wounded when two suicide bombers attacked a Shiite mosque in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa, local medics said.

Witnesses said the bombings were carried out by a man wearing an explosive belt and another driving a bomb-laden vehicle and targeted worshippers leaving the mosque in the Jarraf district in northern Sanaa.

Mali: Islamic extremists attack army checkpoint killing 2 soldiers

Suspected Islamic extremists attacked an army checkpoint in Timbuktu early Tuesday, killing at least two soldiers and injuring one, the government said.

Another soldier is missing and a search has been launched for the extremists who carried out the attacks with automatic weapons, Mali’s government said in a statement.

Somalia: Al-Shabaab militants raid African Union base killing 50 soldiers

Anti-government Al Shabab militants attacked an Ugandan military camp that beloged to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and killed 50 peacekeepers, said a communique from that radical Somali organization.

The base is located in Janale, in Basse-Shabelle region, about 90 km (55 miles) south of this capital, and the command entered the base after one of their fighters rammed a car bomb into the base’s gate, said Al Shabab spokesman, Abdulaziz Abu Musab.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: 6 soldiers killed in ambush north of Goma

Six soldiers have been killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) North Kivu province, a region where Rwandan Hutu rebels are known to operate, regional and military sources said.

The attack took place in Rugari, about 50km north of Goma, the capital of North Kivu.

Syria: Fierce fighting in north Syria as Turkey launches air raids

Islamic State militants are maintaining their offensive on towns at the heart of a safe zone that US and Turkish authorities want to carve out in northern Syria — despite Turkish fighter jets recently launching their first air strikes as part of the American-led coalition against the jihadist terror army. Rebel commanders say coalition strikes need to be ramped up to ward off the extremists.

The fight for the countryside to the north of Aleppo is now ratcheting up rapidly. Islamist rebel factions on Monday mounted several rocket barrages at IS positions in the villages of al-Madjanah and Tlalin. They managed to retake the town of Sadaf after heavy clashes with the extremists.
