Burkina Faso soldiers marched into the capital Ouagadougou without resistance late on Monday as army leaders began surrender talks with the elite presidential guard that staged a coup against the government last week.
Burkina Faso had been preparing to head to polls on Oct. 11 for a vote aimed at restoring democracy after last year’s overthrow of longtime leader Blaise Compaore when the 1,200-member unit took the interim president and several cabinet ministers hostage on Wednesday.

At least 54 people have been killed in a series of blasts in northeast Nigeria, the latest attacks by Boko Haram militants on “soft” civilian targets.
The attacks in the city of Maiduguri on Monday targeted the Ajilari Cross evening market area and neighbouring Gomari, hitting worshippers at a mosque and football fans watching a televised match.

Local forces in Syria backed by popular defense forces have killed more than 100 al-Qaeda linked militants during a series of violent clashes in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib, a report says.
The Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen satellite channel said in a report on Saturday that the militants were killed after local forces repelled fresh attacks by the al-Nusra Front in the al-Fo’aa and Kefraya villages in Idlib.

There were heavy air strikes this afternoon in Benghazi’s Leithi, Gwarsha and Sabri districts following the announcement of a new military operation against the Islamic State and other militant groups in the city.
The launch of Operation Doom (Hatif) was unveiled earlier in the day by the head of Libyan armed forces, General Khalifa Haftar, at a military gathering at Benina Airbase.
