More than 45 years ago, Nigeria was nearly divided by a bloody civil war that led to the deaths of over a million people. Now, a revival in secessionist sentiment in southeastern Nigeria, among supporters of the historical state of Biafra, threatens to undermine President Muhammadu Buhari’s vision of a united Nigeria and spill over into regional violence.
Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of southern Nigeria in recent weeks following the arrest of a prominent pro-Biafran activist, who has been accused by Nigerian authorities of hate speech and treason. As well as demanding their colleague’s release, some protesters are calling for the establishment of an independent Biafra once again.

Nigerian refugees have said that Cameroonian troops crossed the border into Nigeria, killed about 150 villagers, burned their huts and forced them to flee.
The refugees said on Tuesday, December 8 that they had to walk for days before reaching a refugee center.
Mariamu Abubakar, a farmer, said Cameroonian soldiers on Monday, November 30, killed about 150 people in his village near Nigeria’s Banki border post.

Lawlessness in the Central African Republic is helping Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army continue its almost 30-year regional campaign of killings and abductions, according to a United Nations report.
The Ugandan warlord’s forces remain the main threat to peace in the diamond-rich country’s east and southeast, states a report by a UN panel of experts due to be published by the end of the year. The militia emerged in northern Uganda in the late 1980s, spread to neighboring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and has caused the deaths of about 100,000 people while forcing 2.5 million others to flee their homes.

Galmudug and Puntland states began Sunday withdrawing rival their combat forces from the frontline in the southern of Galkayo town of Mudug region following a ceasefire accord.
Somali prime minister Omar Abdirashid, and leaders Galmudug and Puntland administrations Abdikarin Hussein Guled and Abdiwali Gaas arrived the battle zones to observe the withdrawal of the armed forces.

At least 14 people and eight Taliban fighters have been killed after an attack on the heavily fortified Kandahar airport compound in southern Afghanistan, officials say.
Taliban forces on Tuesday night attacked buildings housing government employees and military bases at the airport, which is used by Afghan, US and NATO military forces.
