Iraq: Dozens of Islamic State (ISIS) fighters killed in clashes with Kurdish Peshmerga near Mosul

Subsequent to fierce clashes with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, at least 20 militant fighters from the Islamic State (ISIS) were killed and more than 25 others were wounded near Mosul city in Iraq’s northwestern province of Nineveh, the Peshmerga said in a statement on Saturday.

“Daesh terrorists attacked our (Peshmerga) headquarters in Makhmur district southeast of Mosul, using car bombs and mortar shells,” the Kurdish leadership said in a statement, using another acronym for ISIS.

Nigeria: Protesters calling for an independent State of Biafra

The songs of protesters calling for an independent state of Biafra are growing louder by the day in southeastern Nigeria. As the volume increases, so do the tensions within the region.

Agitation for the Biafra region to become an independent state has been growing. In the late 1960s, an attempt by the region to secede from Nigeria to form an independent state led to the Nigerian civil war which lasted for 30 months.

Syria: Heavy clashes as Syria government forces advance on rebel town of Rabia

Syrian government forces edged closer to a key rebel town in the coastal province of Latakia Friday, backed by Russian air strikes and military advisers, activists said.

Soldiers and pro-government fighters advanced to around five kilometers (three miles) from the town of Rabia, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Somalia: Al-Shabaab terrorists attack restaurant-hotel killing at least 20 people in Mogadishu

At least 20 people died and 17 were wounded after a suicide car bomber and gunmen attacked a beachside restaurant-hotel in the capital of Somalia, authorities said. Six attackers were also killed.

Government forces fought a gun battle with the the attackers, who were identified as members of the al-Shabaab terror group. The country’s security minister said the alleged commander of the attack was captured alive by security forces. The commander was not named.

Egypt: Sinai Province terrorist group attacks Egyptian checkpoint in Sinai killing 5 policemen

Gunmen have killed five Egyptian policemen at a checkpoint in the Sinai Peninsula, the interior ministry said Thursday, in the latest attack claimed by the Daesh terrorist group.

The incident happened on Wednesday night in North Sinai province where security forces are battling a extremist insurgency.

“Unidentified gunmen opened fire on security forces at El-Etlawi square in the centre of El-Arish,” the ministry said in a statement, referring to the provincial capital.
