The proposed “cessation of hostilities” in Syria, announced jointly earlier this week by Russia and the United States, went into effect at midnight Friday in Damascus (5 p.m. ET).
U.N. Special Envoy Staffan De Mistura said at a press briefing in Geneva that immediate reports indicated “suddenly both Daraa and Damascus had calmed down.”

Around 7:45 p.m. on Friday night, a powerful explosion followed by heavy gunfire heard in most parts of Mogadishu, the Somali capital, officials said.
A car bomb was set off near SYL – Somali youth league hotel next to Villa Somalia, the heavily fortified presidential palace of Somalia, killing more than 20 people, including soldiers and civilians.

At least 14 militants, including a commander, have been killed during an operation in the Dasht-i-Archi district of northeastern Kunduz province, officials said on Thursday.
However, residents alleged the fighting had also inflicted casualties on civilians and forced them to leave the area for safer places.

Special French Commando forces arrived in Benghazi, Libya, to support Brigadier General Khalifa Haftar and to provide support for military operations in the city, informed Libyan security sources confirmed.
In an exclusive statement to the Huffington Post Arabi, the sources explained that these forces are currently stationed in Benina Air Base, east of Benghazi, the most important military base for troops loyal to Haftar. Neither the number nor the size of the forces is known.
