Islamic State (Isis) have less than 10,000 fighters in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, but it would be an “optimistic estimate” to say the city will be secured by the end of this year, a US official has said. But US Army Colonel Christopher Garver said the battle for the city had already started.
“We have struck [Isis] fighters, weapons, leaders, and financial assets with precision and lethality,” the spokesman for the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve told a news conference on 4 March . But he said that Iraqi forces were responsible for planning for the operation with coalition support, although they were looking for ways to accelerate the timeline for its completion, which was slated for the end of this year.

Syrian rebels have seized control of the Syrian side of a major border crossing with Iraq from the Islamic State group, activists said Saturday.
The Local Coordination Committees said U.S.-backed fighters from the Free Syrian Army’s Southern Front killed one Islamic State fighter and wounded several others in the process of taking the Tanaf border crossing late Friday.

A spokesperson for the Arakan Army claimed Friday that the ethnic armed group destroyed two vehicles belonging to Burma’s military using rocket-propelled grenades, killing some 30 soldiers from the Buthidaung-based Light Infantry Battalion No. 565 in the attack.
The strike, according to Khine Thu Kha of the Arakan Army, occurred on Thursday evening near Wanet Yon village, about 18 miles northeast of Buthidaung town in Arakan State.

Clashes erupted in Sirte on Thursday when IS militants attacked a civilian’s house in the city center to arrest a wanted man.
IS militants stormed the second residential district early in the morning to arrest a man named Khaled Al-Wirffalli, who is suspected of being the secrete sniper who killed several IS militants.

Two female terrorists who opened fire and dropped hand-made bombs at the entrance of the Riot Police Directorate in Bayrampaşa on Thursday morning, on Istanbul’s European side, have been identified as members of the DHKP-C terror organization.
The two women, identified as Çiğdem Yakşi and Berna Yılmaz, were reported to have carried out the attack at 9.45 a.m. [0745GMT], prompting the police to retaliate with fire.
