Nigeria: 829 captives of Boko Haram freed by army

At least 829 Boko Haram captives have been freed in the northeastern Borno state as Nigerian troops intensified “clearance operations” across the region once occupied by militants.

Army spokesman Sani Usman said late Thursday that 22 militants were killed Tuesday night in an operation in the Kala Balge area of Borno while 309 persons held captives by the militants were freed.

Syria: Syrian government forces retake ancient city of Palmyra

Iraq: Iraq has launched offensive to recapture ISIS-held Mosul

The Iraqi military backed by U.S.-led coalition aircraft on Thursday launched a long-awaited operation to recapture the northern city of Mosul from Islamic State militants, a military spokesman said.

In the push, Iraqi forces retook several villages on the outskirts of the town of Makhmour, east of Mosul, early in the morning on Thursday and hoisted the Iraqi flag there, according to the spokesman for the Joint Military Command, Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool.

Libya: 7 dead in clashes between tribesmen and forces loyal to unrecognised government near Tripoli

At least seven people were killed in clashes on Wednesday west of Tripoli between tribesmen and forces loyal to Libya’s unrecognised government, an army officer said.

The violence in the village of Touebiya, 30km from the capital, stemmed from a failed burglary.
