At least 829 Boko Haram captives have been freed in the northeastern Borno state as Nigerian troops intensified “clearance operations” across the region once occupied by militants.
Army spokesman Sani Usman said late Thursday that 22 militants were killed Tuesday night in an operation in the Kala Balge area of Borno while 309 persons held captives by the militants were freed.
Syrian state television says government forces have now fought their way into the ancient city of Palmyra.
The army has been trying to retake Palmyra since it was seized by ISIL fighters in May 2015.

The Iraqi military backed by U.S.-led coalition aircraft on Thursday launched a long-awaited operation to recapture the northern city of Mosul from Islamic State militants, a military spokesman said.

The violence in the village of Touebiya, 30km from the capital, stemmed from a failed burglary.
