Philippines: Army offensive kills 8 militants and wounds commander

Eight more Abu Sayyaf extremists have been killed and a top militant commander has been wounded as Philippine troops pressed a major offensive in the country’s south following the killings of 18 soldiers in fierce fighting over the weekend, the military said Monday.

Regional military spokesman Maj. Filemon Tan said four Abu Sayyaf gunmen who were wounded in battle Saturday later died and four other militants were killed in fresh fighting Sunday in the hilly outskirts of Tipo Tipo town on Basilan island.

A ruthless Abu Sayyaf commander, Puruji Indama, was seriously wounded in the head either by gun or artillery fire, Tan said. Indama has been linked to deadly bombings, kidnappings for ransom and beheadings of Filipino marines.

Peru: Shining Path guerrilla group attack death toll raised to 7

A guerilla attack on Peruvian soldiers on the eve of the country’s presidential elections killed seven people, authorities said Sunday, raising the previous day’s toll.

The head of the state prosecution service, Pablo Sanchez, said in a televised address that seven people were killed and five wounded in Saturday’s attack in the jungles of central Peru.

Yemen: Loyalists and rebels vow to respect truce

Loyalist and rebel forces in Yemen each pledged to honour a truce which began at midnight Sunday (2100 GMT) ahead of new talks aimed at ending more than a year of war.

The Iran-backed Huthis, along with allied troops loyal to ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, have sent the United Nations a letter committing to “cease land, sea and air military operations” throughout Yemen, according to a communique carried by the rebel-run Saba news agency.

Iraq: US plane drops arms for Daesh according several Iraqi policemen

Several Iraqi policemen claim to have seen US aircraft dropping weapons and munitions for Daesh terrorists in a region west of the Anbar province on Friday.

In a video posted on Iraq’s al-Maaloomah news website on Sunday, they are purportedly heard saying that the American plane had also jammed their communication devices in the Hadisah Island district.

Syria: Al-Nusra Front rebels and Syrian government forces battle in fierce clashes near Aleppo

Syrian government forces and their allies battled insurgents including al Qaeda fighters in fierce clashes south of Aleppo late on Saturday, and the rebels advanced taking over two hilltops, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Britain-based monitoring group’s director Rami Abdulrahman said this might mark a breakdown in the area of a fragile cessation of hostilities agreement which has been in place for several weeks and slowed fighting but not halted it.
