Egypt: Islamic State (IS) and Popular Resistance Movement claim responsibility for killing 8 police officers in Helwan

Eight plainclothes police officers were killed on Sunday morning in an armed attack that targeted a checkpoint operation near Helwan police station, according to a statement issued on the Interior Ministry’s official Facebook page directly after the attack.

“On Sunday morning while plainclothes officers from Helwan police station were operating a checkpoint in a minibus near their station on Omar Abdel Aziz Street, four anonymous militants driving a truck opened fire at the officers,” the statement read.

Turkey: 55 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants killed as Turkish military hits positions in Syria

The Turkish military hit Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) positions in Syria on May 7, killing 55 ISIL militants.

Reconnaissance and surveillance vehicles spotted ISIL positions in the Suran region north of Aleppo and the Baragidah and Kuşacık regions northeast of Tal el Hişn, security sources said.

Burma-Myanmar: As conflict reignites, Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) claims gains at Shan State Army-South (SSA-S) army’s expense

Fighting broke out this week at eight separate locations in northern Shan State, pitting the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) against the Shan State Army-South (SSA-S), with the TNLA reclaiming army bases from SSA-S troops, according to a statement from the former on Thursday. The locations of the hostilities were spread across the adjacent townships of Mongton, Namkham and Kyaukme.

The two ethnic armed groups have been engaged in conflict over territory in northern Shan State since late last year, after the SSA-S signed the so-called nationwide ceasefire agreement with the previous government. The TNLA, which was not allowed to sign the accord, has accused the Burma Army of lending logistical support and protection to the SSA-S—a charge the SSA-S has consistently denied.

Syria: Scores killed in fierce fighting between army and rebels in south of Aleppo

More than 73 people were killed in fighting on Friday between Syrian government forces and opposition rebels south of Aleppo in northern Syria, according to a monitoring group.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that air attacks by government forces and heavy artillery exchanges took place in and around the village of Khan Tuman where opposition fighters from groups including the Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham launched an attack on Thursday.

Nigeria: Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) militants attack Chevron oil facility in Nigeria

Armed militants attacked a major Chevron oil and gas facility off Nigeria’s southern coast, the military said Friday, and the U.S.-based multinational said it was forced to shut production there but its exports will continue.

A new group called the Niger Delta Avengers said it bombed Chevron’s Okan platform on Wednesday and warned international companies that “the Nigerian military can’t protect your facilities.”
