Somalia: 5 killed in al-Shabaab terror attack in Mogadishu

At least 5 people have been killed in an attack involving a suicide car bombing and subsequent gunfights in the Somalian capital of Mogadishu. In addition, 4 of the terrorists associated with the al-Shabaab Islamist group were also killed.

A suicide bomber rammed a vehicle loaded with explosives into the gates of the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters in Mogadishu, reports Somalian police.

Burma-Myanmar: Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Burma army clash amid ongoing ethnic summit

As ethnic armed groups gathered in Kachin State’s Mai Ja Yang to search for common ground toward federalism in Burma, clashes broke out twice on Thursday between the Burma Army and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA)—the armed wing of Kachin Independence Organization (KIO).

Battalion No. 2 under KIA Brigade No. 6 and battalions under the Burma Army’s 10th Military Operations Commands (MOC-10) clashed twice at Hopong Mountain in northern Shan State’s Kutkai Township, said Lt Col Naw Bu, a KIO information officer.

South Sudan: Machar troops ready at any time to storm Juba capital

Rebel fighters will enter South Sudanese capital Juba unless peacekeeping forces are sent, the country’s deposed Vice President Riek Machar told Anadolu Agency on Friday.

Machar is the leader of rebels who fought a two-year civil war against government forces under President Salva Kiir. He was rehabilitated into the government in April following a peace deal that broke down three weeks ago, leading to hundreds of deaths.

Nigeria: Anti-Boko Haram task force recaptures Damasak town in Borno state

A multinational task force battling Boko Haram said on Thursday it had recaptured the only town in northeast Nigeria’s Borno state that was still held by the Islamist militant group.

Boko Haram, which formed in Borno, has waged an insurgency since 2009 to carve out a state based on sharia (Islamic law) in the northeast of Africa’s most populous country. More than 15,000 people have been killed and some 2.4 million displaced.

Syria: Save the Children maternity hospital in Idlib bombarded

At least two people have been killed and three others wounded after an airstrike hit a maternity hospital supported by Save the Children is north-western Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitor, said airstrikes hit the hospital and also a civil defence building.
