Somaliland: Somaliland wants to secede — will it be Africa’s 55th country?

Despite the declaration, Somaliland is still considered an autonomous region of Somalia by the United Nations. But President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud Silanyo is pushing hard for recognition of full sovereignty.

India: 17 Indian soldiers killed in militant attack on Kashmir army base

Militants armed with guns and grenades killed 17 soldiers in a raid on Sunday on an army base in Kashmir, the worst such attack for more than a decade in the disputed Himalayan region.

The rebels broke into the base near the town of Uri before dawn and lobbed the grenades at tents and barracks housing the soldiers before opening fire, an army officer said requesting anonymity.

Libya: Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG) retakes Sidra and Ras Lanuf oil terminals in east

Forces of Ibrahim Jodran’s so-called Petroleum Facilities Guard have launched a counter attack on Dignity Operation militia groups in the oil crescent region to regain control of the oil terminals, which they lost last week.

Backed by other rival groups to Dignity Operation, the PFG advanced from Nofaliya town towards the oil terminals early on Sunday under a military operation called “Dispersive Illusion.” As soon as they approached Sidra oil terminal, fierce clashes erupted with Dignity Operation militias who later fled the scene and withdrew to Ras Lanuf, around 30 km east of Sidra.

Somalia: Somali forces recapture El-Wak city from al-Shabaab militants

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said the Somali forces pushed back the militants who seized the town on Friday after an attack on the Somali army base there.

AMISOM troops are helping the Somali government battle Al-Shabaab militants.
