Somali government troops recaptured Goofgaduud in southern Somalia after al-Shabab militants briefly took control of the village Sunday, officials and witnesses said.
“The militants attacked a government military base. The troops made a strategic retreat and counter attacked the militants. Now, Somali government forces have retaken the full control of the village,” said regional deputy police chief, Mohamed Isaq Ara’as.

Six terrorists and four soldiers were killed during army operations in Egypt’s extremism-infested North Sinai, military officials said on Sunday.
Three militant hideouts, two vehicles and three unlicensed motorcycles used by them in their attacks against police personnel were also destroyed, military spokesperson Brigadier General Mohamed Samir said in a statement.

Twenty-five people have been killed in clashes in the Central African Republic this week, the United Nations said Saturday.
On Thursday, 15 people were killed in clashes between Muslim Seleka rebels and Christian Anti-balaka militia, near the town of Bambari in the south of the country.

Syrian government forces have launched a counter offensive under the cover of airstrikes in an attempt to regain control of areas they lost to insurgents the day before in the northern city of Aleppo, activists and state media said.
The offensive came a day after Syrian rebels launched a broad ground attack aiming to break a weeks-long government siege on the eastern rebel-held neighbourhoods of Syria’s largest city.

Residents say fighters linked to the Islamic State group have seized an ancient port town in Somalia’s semiautonomous northeastern state of Puntland.
Hassan Adan, an elder in Qandala, said up to 50 armed militants captured the town Wednesday after security forces withdrew. The town is 75 kilometres (47 miles) east of Puntland’s commercial hub, Bossaso.
