Iraq: Dozens takfiri Daesh terrorists killed in Mosul military operations

Dozens of Daesh terrorists have reportedly been killed during separate operations in and around Mosul as Iraqi government troops and their allies are tightening the noose around the extremists controlling the northern city.

The Arabic-language al-Sumaria television network reported on Wednesday that Iraqi fighter jets, backed by those of the US-led military coalition, have hit Daesh positions in Albu Seif village south of Mosul, located some 400 kilometers north of the capital Baghdad, leaving 40 of the terrorists dead.

Niger: 5 soldiers killed in Banibangou attack

Five soldiers were killed and four others missing following an attack on Tuesday in southwest Niger close to the border with Mali, a security source told AFP.

“This terrorist attack against the town of Banibangou killed five soldiers, injured three and four others were reported missing,” said the source, who requested anonymity.

Somalia: Renewed fighting between Galmudug and Puntland forces erupts in Galkayo

Heavy fighting broke out in Galkayo city, the administrative capital of Mudug region, between forces loyal to Puntland and Galmudug.

According to local residents, the fighting started Sunday early morning and reported that both forces have used heavy weapons and anti-aircraft guns in the clashes.

Syria: Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announce start of campaign to retake Raqqa

U.S.-backed Kurdish-led Syrian forces announced their plan Sunday to retake the Islamic State group’s de facto capital of Raqqa, saying they hoped Turkey would not “interfere in internal Syrian affairs.”

The announcement by the Syrian Democratic Forces, a coalition of Kurdish, Arab and Christian forces, was made Sunday at a press conference in Ein Issa, north of Raqqa, attended by commanders and spokespeople for the group. An official who read out a statement said the operation to liberate Raqqa, dubbed the “Euphrates Rage” operation, had officially begun.

Afghanistan: US claims killing key al-Qaeda leader in Afghanistan

The US military confirmed on Friday it had killed al-Qaeda’s amir for north-eastern Afghanistan during an air strike last month, terming it a major blow to the militant group.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook confirmed the assault that killed Farouq al-Qahtani as a “precision strike” and said it took place on October 23 in Kunar, Afghanistan.
