Armed Congolese rebels crossed back overnight into the country from their longtime refuge in Uganda, prompting fears that a guerilla conflict put to rest in 2013 could be rekindled.
At least 200 former members of M23, an ethnic Tutsi group defeated by the Congolese army three years ago, arrived from Uganda and took over a village in North Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo government spokesman Lambert Mende told AFP.

Iraqi forces have made a crucial step in the bloody quest to retake Mosul from the Islamic State, according to a spokesman for the country’s military. Iraqi Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool announced that the city’s university has been fully retaken from ISIS militants.
Special forces, known in Iraq as the Counter-Terrorism Service, or CTS, raised the Iraqi flag above the campus Friday, the Associated Press reports — but the troops were still days away from claiming complete control.

Ukrainian government forces and the pro-Russian separatist rebels fighting in eastern Ukraine on Saturday accused each other of disrupting a fragile truce declared late December.
Kiev and the rebels agreed a new “indefinite” ceasefire deal after Ukraine and Russia held talks in Minsk last month mediated by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and it went into force on December 24.

The Islamic State launched their largest offensive of the year inside Syria on Saturday, January 14, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s (IS) final positions inside the desert province of Deir ez-Zor, AMN reports.
IS began the assault by simultaneously storming the Al-Baghiliyah and Al-Rashidiyah districts of Deir ez-Zor city; this resulted in a fierce battle with the Syrian Arab Army’s 123rd Brigade.

Five Malian soldiers were killed when their vehicle hit a landmine in the centre of the country on Wednesday, military sources told AFP.
The explosion occurred between the central Segou and Mopti regions.
“We have lost five men. Their vehicle set off a mine. They were all in the same vehicle,” a Malian military official said.
