Syria: 70 killed, including children, in worst chemical attack in years

The death toll from the suspected gas attack Tuesday in Syria’s Idlib province has reached 70, according to the Aleppo Media Center. That includes at least 10 children.

The attack is suspected to be one of the deadliest chemical attacks in Syria in years, multiple activist groups say. The Aleppo Media Center says 45 bodies have been identified so far.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Kamwina Nsapu armed group kills 8 people in the south

Authorities say a brutal armed group in southern Congo blamed for murdering a UN team has killed at least eight people over the weekend.

The fighters loyal to traditional leader Kamwina Nsapu launched their attack on Luebo late Friday. Among the victims was the area administrator’s wife.

Thailand: 12 police injured in attack by suspected insurgents in south of the country

Some 20 to 30 suspected insurgents injured 12 officers while attacking a police checkpoint in the Thai Deep South with grenade launchers and other weapons on Monday, the police chief in Yala province said.

The attack in Yala’s Krong Pinang district appeared to have been carried out in retaliation for the killings of two suspected rebels by security personnel last week in Narathiwat, another province in the Deep South, officials said.

Russia: Russia blames terrorists for Saint Petersburg subway blast that kills at least 10 people

Russia blamed terrorists for an explosion on Monday that killed at least 10 people in a subway train in St. Petersburg, the country’s second-largest city and the hometown of President Vladimir Putin, who was visiting at the time.

There was no indication that Putin, who was in St. Petersburg for talks with Belarusian President Alexander G. Lukashenko, was anywhere near the underground blast, which injured at least 47 people in addition to the dead.

Two of the suicide bombers tried to make entry into the city through one of the known entry points near Muna Garage, a popular bus station along Maidugurui-Gamboru road.
