A number of Islamic State (IS) militants were killed on Friday after they were ambushed by Peshmerga in northern Tal Afar, some 65 kilometres west of Mosul.
Peshmerga commander Badirkhan Zebari confirmed to BasNews that six jihadists were gunned down by the Kurdish forces while they were attempting to escape Tal Afar.

Syria said Israeli airstrikes targeted a military facility in the west of the country, killing two soldiers.
Syria’s military confirmed in a statement that Israeli warplanes struck the site near the town of Masyaf after 2 a.m. on Thursday from Lebanese airspace. The statement warned Israel of “serious consequences” over the attack.

The Philippines military has teamed up with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters as it prepares for a final assault against the Maute armed group in the southern city of Marawi.
Soldiers were seen mingling freely with several hundred MILF fighters who have joined forces for an assault on fighters on the southern island of Mindanao.

Negotiators from the National Liberation Army (ELN) rebel group say they have agreed a temporary ceasefire with the Colombian government, the BBC reports.
It is the first time the two sides have agreed a ceasefire in more than 50 years of conflict.

East Libyan forces said they had launched air strikes on Islamic State fighters after the militants made incursions south and east of their former coastal stronghold of Sirte.
IS has grown bolder in recent weeks, setting up temporary checkpoints, attacking local forces, and taking over village mosques to lead prayers during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, Libyan officials say.
