Syria: Syrian government formally recognizes the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

The Syrian government recognized the independence of Georgia’s breakaway regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia in a gesture of thanks to its largest patron of late, Russia. Georgia responded by severing diplomatic relations with Syria.

“In gratitude for the assistance against terrorist aggression, the Syrian Arabic Republic has decided to establish diplomatic relations with the republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia,” Syria’s foreign ministry said in a statement issued on May 29, adding that embassies will open soon in both regions.

Israel: Israel strikes Gaza after heaviest mortar barrage by jihadist groups in years

Israel has attacked militant sites in Gaza after coming under the heaviest barrage of mortar and rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave in years.

The Israeli army said air strikes hit 35 targets, including a cross-border tunnel, belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad - Gaza’s main militant groups.

Israel: 3 Al Quds Brigades members killed by Israeli tank fire in Gaza

Three Palestinians were killed by tank fire on Sunday, hours after an Israeli soldier wounded in a West Bank raid died.

The Gazan health ministry said the incident happened east of the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, and identified those killed as Hussein Al Amour, 25, and Abdul Haleem Al Naqa, 28, and Marwa Al Amour, 25.

Ukraine: 3 Ukrainian soldiers killed in clashes with rebels

Three Ukrainian servicemen were killed in fighting with pro-Russian rebels in the east of the country as fighting intensified in the region, Kiev said on Sunday.

Ukraine’s defence ministry said one soldier was killed in fighting late on Saturday. The country s security service (SBU) later on Sunday confirmed two other servicemen were killed in shelling in the Luhansk region.

Yemen: Yemeni forces make new gains in Hodeida advance

With the support of the UAE Armed Forces operating as part of the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, the Yemeni National and Tihama Resistance Forces, and the Giants’ Brigades continued advancing towards the Al Jah area in the Bayt Al Faqih District, reaching within 50km of the strategic Hodeida port. This comes amid an unprecedented state of confusion, panic and collapse in Al Houthi militia defences and ranks, as a result of the surprise military operations.

The resistance forces found - during the combing and purging operations - very large quantities of weapons, ammunitions and military equipment and vehicles after the militia fled Al Mugris and the farms they were hiding in within the Tahita district.
